Could Flea Collars Cause Chemical Burns On Cats And Dogs?

KHQ News looked into the story to see if there's a bigger concern for cat and dog owners

You may have seen a Facebook post being shared around about a cat who appears to have suffered severe chemical burns from a flea collar.

KHQ News looked into the story to see if there's a bigger concern for cat and dog owners. The original post has been shared tens of thousands of times. The cat's owner says he put a "Sergeant's Dual Action Flea and Tick Collar" on his cat and a few days later noticed that it appeared to have caused a serious chemical burn.

Reporters say they've been unable to verify the story, and couldn't reach the original poster, who is based in Florida.

Sergeant's Dual Action collars are sold nationwide, including at Walmart. And this particular brand has a lot of bad reviews... hundreds of them.

One person says "Put on my cat. Couple days later I had to take off and wash his neck. Burned him and his hair around his neck. I am heartbroken. This should be taken off the shelf. I will never buy this or any other product."

Another writes, "The Dual Action Flea and Tick Collar has caused my three cats to have rawness and infection with loss of fur around the neck area where the collar was. Do not buy this collar!"

There are also at least two Facebook groups devoted to warning people about Sergeant's Flea and Tick products.

Bottom line: talk to a vet. Some of these products are fine and some are fine for one dog or cat but maybe not another.
